Step by Step: DIY Pennant Flags

Updated: Nov 11, 2019

Here are your simple, step by step instructions on how to make these cute, one-of-a-kind pennant flags. Feel free to change up the colors, fonts, and phrases to match your vision! This quick craft is perfect for any budget and works great for baby showers, birthdays, kids rooms, dorm rooms, and more.

- Be sure to use high quality scissors to make cutting your felt as easy as possible. My current scissors need a major upgrade (after years of abuse) and I had a tougher time getting through the felt.

- I prefer using white cardstock over a plain piece of printer paper because we will be using it as a stencil, and thicker paper will perform better as a stencil.

- Also, the double sided tape is not mandatory, but can be very helpful if you happen to have it.

- First, take your 12x9 piece of felt and, using your ruler, draw a triangle with a base measuring 7 inches, and both sides measuring 11 inches.

- Cut out your triangle.

- Second, on your piece of white cardstock, draw another triangle. This one will measure 6 inches on the base and 9.5 inches on both sides.

- This will serve as your letter stencil and measuring it smaller than your felt triangle will keep your letters neatly inside the pennant.

- Cut out your triangle.

- Now, depending on what phrase you intend to write on your pennant, divide your cardstock into separate sections for each letter using your pencil. My phrase is "Go Team", so I have divided mine into 6 sections.

- You may need to adjust the size of each section as you begin to sketch your letters in the next step.

- Sketch out your letters to fit within each section.

- DO NOT WORRY ABOUT PERFECTION. Simply create the general shape of each letter and use your scissors in the next step to clean up the edges. Remember, these are only stencils and will not serve as your final product.

- Cut out your letters.

- Helpful tip: check to see if your edges are smooth by flipping the letters over to the clean side. This will allow you to more clearly evaluate the shape of your letters and whether they need to be trimmed anywhere.

- Trace each letter onto your white felt using your sharpie.

- *This is where your optional double sided tape can come in handy. Attaching small pieces to the back of your letter stencils keeps them from moving around the felt as you trace.

- Cut out your felt letters and do your best to trim off any remaining sharpie lines around the edges.

- This is the step that really calls for high quality scissors! ( or at least sharp ones)

- Hot glue your felt letters to your felt triangle.

- It helps to lay out your letters on the triangle without any glue first, and then glue them on one by one to give you better accuracy with your spacing when attaching them.

- Using more of your white felt and your sharpie, measure out 3 strips: 1 will be 7.5 inches by 3/4 inch, and 2 will be 7.5 inches by a 1/2 inch.

- Cut out your strips.

- These will become the pennant's top border and tassels.

- Fold your two 1/2 inch strips into a tight "V" shape and hot glue them at their centers.

- Folding the strip first, opening it back up, and then placing a dot of glue above the crease will help ensure you create the shape you want.

- Hot glue your tassels to the top edge of your pennant at even intervals.

- Be sure not to place them too far down on the edge because we eventually want the bottom of the tassels to be hidden by the 1/2 inch strip.

- Attach your 1/2 inch strip across the top edge of your pennant, covering the bottom portion of the tassels.

- Place the strip slightly above the top edge of your pennant to keep the blue edge from showing.

Here is your final product! You can use the tassels to tie your pennant to a string and create a banner effect, or use your double sided tape along the back to attach it straight to the wall.

This quick and easy craft is versatile, budget friendly, and totally unique. Show your spirit and get crafting!
