DIY: Monogram Fall Wreath

Updated: Nov 11, 2019

It's officially fall now, so you need a fall wreath, right? I might actually be a little late to the wreath game this year. Feels like people start prepping for the next season a lot earlier now. Hell, I'm probably behind on Christmas already! Well, here's our autumn inspired wreath for the current season.

Utilizing unused picture frames in your own home can make this project even easier.

I wanted to make something a little unexpected, and recently I had seen some wreaths made from picture frames and thought that was a really cool (and convenient) take on the traditional wreath shape. I've also been steering away from the traditional oranges, browns, and reds of the season, and enjoying the more muted fall colors, like beige, white, and taupe. But I do love color so I had to bring something bright into the color palette.

We are a budget family, so I'm always searching for the most cost effective way to accomplish any task I have. Usually I shop for supplies at Michael's, but their fake flowers and other decorative wreath accessories can be pricey. While I was shopping at Walmart the other day, I finally noticed (after who knows how many trips through there) their sewing and crafting section! They don't have everything you could ever need, but they have A LOT, and they definitely had better prices for what I needed.

The colors really stand out against the color of the door.

Everything I used to make this wreath was purchased at Walmart, except for the paint markers I used for the lettering. I found this square hanging frame with a clear plastic pane in it, a roll of off-white burlap, and two sprigs of assorted fall decorations. The clear plastic pane gave me the idea to write our initial on the wreath.

This craft took an hour tops to complete, including all the experimenting with pumpkin placement. Originally I thought I might use the burlap as ribbon incorporated between the decorations. The thought came to me to cover the back of the frame with the burlap instead, creating a kind of shadow box effect behind the lettering. I think seeing your front door color through the clear plastic could be a cool look too, though. I cut equal lengths of burlap and layered them along the backside of the frame, securing them with hot glue.

Practice makes perfect for the lettering and the arrangement.

I chose a minty blue for our letter "B" as the pop of color, and like how it compliments the reds in the berries. In my head I imagined a more ornate font, but didn't want to write and rewrite the letter too many times (as I inevitably mess it up), so I settled for a simpler style. I used my favorite Penguin Art Supplies paint markers to write directly onto the plastic pane. It took a few coats to get the color just right.

Placing the decorations around the frame took some pre-planning and experimentation. The balance felt right utilizing the two opposite corners and anchoring the whole thing with the largest flower on the bottom. After shifting everything around a few times and taking pictures as I went to compare the different looks, I hot glued everything to the frame and that was that!

Such a fast, simple, and budget friendly way to add something fun and seasonal to your home. And it proves that not all wreaths have to look the same. It's got me looking forward to making another one for the Christmas season!

Until next time!
